CHAPTER 6

Upside Down

KEON

I had no idea what the hell I was doing. For years, I’d prided myself on my ability to focus, to stay the course, to execute a plan. Yet, for the past two weeks, I’d been forced to admit that I was full of shit.

Rashaad’s wedding was tomorrow. True to my word, I’d kept my mouth shut and my wallet open. Tuxedos. Check . Ring. Check . Toast. Check . And Smoke and Burn was currently being transformed into the rehearsal dinner venue. Taylar’s staff had moved tables, hung drapes, and set up centerpieces. But the wedding planner was nowhere to be found. And she’d been missing in action since I kissed the shit out of her at The Spot.

Granted, I didn’t call her either. But I don’t call anybody . My mother used to tell me stories about how she had to force me to tell her things. Apparently, my lack of communication had started when I was a toddler and had stayed with me into adulthood. It worked for me, though. Women considered me a challenge, so I never had a hard time getting ass. My bosses appreciated that I flew under the radar and didn’t get caught up in plant drama. Business colleagues understood that my silence meant I was working. My friends didn’t give a fuck what I said or didn’t say. They just knew I’d have their backs. Taylar… She’d never pushed me to bare my soul. She talked enough for the both of us and didn’t really get offended when I felt the need to leave the situation because she knew not to take it personal. The fact that she hadn’t reached out, even to check on the status of my Wedding Duties Tasks, dominated my thoughts.

“Bruh, can you grab this?” Ryker walked into the building with a large plastic bin. “Taylar brought more table linens and other shit.”

I grabbed the box and set it on top of the bar. I joined my best friend outside, lowkey hoping to catch a glimpse of Taylar. By the time I made it outside, her car was halfway down the block. Ryker and I worked in silence, answering questions from workers and following a list of instructions Taylar had left.

Ryker grabbed an armload of tablecloths. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you like this.”

Frowning, I turned to him. “What?”

“You’ve been distracted.”

“With work?”

He nodded. “Yeah. And everything else.”

“Did I forget something?”

“No. But I’ve known you since we were kids.”

I waved him off. “I’m good.”

Ryker raised a brow. “Bruh, your brother is marrying the Wicked Witch of the East. Nothing is good about this.”

I cracked up. “You’re stupid for that, man.”

“Seriously, though. You’ve taken care of him, poured into him. Gotta hurt seeing him willingly fuck up.”

I’d pretty much given up on Rashaad coming to his senses before the ceremony. “It is what it is.”

“Have you actually talked to him since that night?”

Aside from Taylar, who’d walked in on the tail end of my argument with Rashaad, Ryker was the only other person who knew anything was wrong between me and my little brother.
